New Delhi

October 28, 2011

I left home at 10am Tuesday and spent the next 22 hrs. on airplanes and in airports on my way to New Delhi - Fort Myers to Atlanta to Amsterdam to Delhi.  Looking out the window, I watched as the sun slid to the horizon over the Caspian Sea; a brilliant red splash of color. I dozed in my seat, but was too excited to get much sleep.

The plane was a bit late and the driver was not at the airport to pick me up.  I finally got it all taken care of with an 1 1/2 hr. wait.

I arrived at the Hotel New King in the heart of the Pahar Ganj neighborhood, past sleeping men on the street, down a very nebulus alley, at around 1:30 am; spooky.  Tired?  Oh, so far beyond that!  My legs quivered as I climbed 3 flights of stairs to a room that would make a cell in an Indian prison look good. It offered no hot water in the shower that didn't work anyway, no towel, toilet paper, or even sheets.  I took a bucket bath with the tub provided, not missing the hot water in the humid heat.  With a wet head, I slipped into my sleep sack and tried to get some sleep. I got an uninvited wake-up call at 5 am, but managed to sleep another few hours after.

The next day I changed to the lovely Hotel Hari Piorko down the street.  Ahhhh, A/C, marble floors, nice bath with towel, soap, tissue, and sheets!  Oh, and cable TV for those down times.  Tomorrow I leave on the train for Rishikesh in the Himalayan foothills for my yoga/meditation classes at the Phool Chatti Ashram.
